The fine print, briefly

Frequently asked.

Twelve honest answers to the questions readers ask most. Yarn substitution, gauge, blocking, terminology, what you can sell, and where to start if you've never picked up a hook before.

  • Are these patterns fully written on the page?
Yes. Every pattern on this site is fully readable on the page. No paywall, no PDF download wall, no email opt-in required.
  • Do I need to register or sign in?
No account, no sign in. Bookmark any pattern and come back whenever you want to make it.
  • Can I print or save patterns to read offline?
Yes. Use your browser's print dialog to print or save as PDF. Patterns are written cleanly so they print well in black and white if you want to save ink.
  • What yarn weight should I use?
Each pattern lists the yarn weight that worked best for the original sample. Most patterns also include yarn substitution suggestions if your local shop carries something different.
  • How do I substitute yarn?
Match the weight first (worsted for worsted, DK for DK, etc.), then check fiber for drape and warmth. For wearables, always swatch and check gauge before committing the full skein. For amigurumi and home decor, you can be more flexible.
  • What is gauge, and do I need to swatch?
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch. For wearables and anything that needs to fit, swatching matters. For stuffed projects, blankets, and decor, you can usually skip the swatch as long as you stay near the suggested hook size.
  • Should I block my finished piece?
For wearables, lacework, and granny-square joins, blocking opens up the stitches and gives a polished finish. For amigurumi and tightly-stuffed pieces, skip it. Patterns that benefit from blocking note it in the finishing section.
  • Are these US or UK crochet terms?
All patterns on patterncrochet are written in US terminology (single crochet, double crochet, etc.). If you read in UK terms, the conversion is one step up: US single = UK double, US double = UK treble.
  • I'm new to crochet. Where should I start?
Start with the beginner skill level page. It lists every pattern rated for first-timers and keeps the project choices simple.
  • Can I sell what I make from these patterns?
Yes. You keep the rights to anything you physically make. The pattern itself is ours; the finished piece is yours to wear, gift, or sell at a craft fair. We just ask that you don't copy or republish the written pattern.
  • How often do new patterns go up?
Roughly weekly. The newest pattern is always at the top of the library. You can also follow along on Pinterest.
  • I spotted a typo or error. What should I do?
Please tell us. Email the studio with the pattern title and the row or step that looks off. We update patterns directly when readers catch mistakes.
